Independent reading levels for independently measured high stakes tests

100 Book Challenge integrates all reading materials and assessment tools into one simple color-coded system that kids, teachers and parents can understand and use to learn in their daily work together. Using national standards for reading competence by grade level, books are leveled based on what readers need to know and be able to do at each of the five developmental stages of reading acquisition, as outlined by No Child Left Behind.

100 Book Challenge's leveling system is unique because it reflects independent reading requirements-- that is, the level at which a child can read by himself or herself, without help. The "just right" independent level is the level where the reader can use what she knows about reading and the world to figure out the few new challenges encountered without any help. It is this routine experience of successful independent problem solving that is at the heart of learning. An understanding of independent reading levels is critical in preparing students to meet the requirements of high-stakes tests-- all of which are predicated on independent reading assessments.

By integrating tools for assessment and instruction under one Leveling System, 100 Book Challenge ensures consistency in its implementation across students, classrooms, schools, districts and states.

You can't get directions without knowing your starting point and desired destination. The 100 Book Challenge Leveling System provides each child with his/her exact starting coordinates, directions on how to become a successful reader and a clear roadmap to stay on track along the way.
