Thirty minutes a day helps establish the kind of literacy environment that is routine in the homes of high performing students in the homes of ALL students
Family literacy is an essential component of the 100 Book Challenge that
helps create a lifelong habit of reading. Reading at home develops the avid
reader lifestyle, for life.
The 100 Book Challenge System provides a formal mechanism through which
students gain access to school library books for use at the home. Every
day, students check books out from their classroom library and take them
home to read. Books travel to and from the home in 100 Book Challenge Book
Bags.
Parents are asked to supervise 30-minutes of independent reading at home each night. At 30 minutes a day, for 5 days a week for the 40-weeks of the school year, students will log at least 100 hours of reading practice per year, in the home alone. Parents are asked to sign log sheets to keep track of the daily independent reading at home. The Log sheets serve to build a constant communication bridge between home and school. 100 Book Challenge Skills Cards move to and from the school with the child, and provide tips that parents can use to offer additional coaching.
The system enables collaboration among parents and teachers to improve literacy achievement and learning.
