One-on-one student conferences to coach and assess
100 Book Challenge systems provides an on-the-job reading specialist
course for teachers to learn to teach reading in the context of their daily
work. During the independent reading segment of the Readers’
Workshop, teachers conduct one-on-one conferences with students and
maintain detailed notes of students’ strengths and needs in a
Conference Notebook containing a separate section for each student.
Teachers learn to focus on the “Zone of Self-Improvement”,
using an Assessment Map to collect data as a child reads. In the Zone of
Self-Improvement, the teacher records self-corrections, problem-solving
strategies, and repair strategies the student applies without any prompting
or support from the teacher.
