Reader's Workshop

Integrating independent reading into the literacy curriculum

The Reader’s Workshop format is the central delivery method for incorporating independent reading into other parts of the literacy curriculum. Teachers learn to help students transfer the skills taught in the core curriculum into their real reading lives.

The Reader’s Workshop involves a mini-lesson, independent reading and sharing. The Workshop lives within a basic model for effective instruction that interconnects demonstration and direct instruction with independent practice and assessment. These pieces are often missing or underused in many classrooms.

Teacher models comprehension strategy during shared or guided reading or read aloud.

Students practice the previously modeled strategy in self-selected independent reading.

Teacher conducts on-on-one conferences and group sharing.
