The ABE leveling system allows teachers to locate both books and students in relation to national grade-level standards, providing knowledge that is critical for helping readers with widely varying strengths and challenges. American Benchmarks for Excellence Leveling Guidelines provides information and support for teachers who are interested in learning to level the books in their classroom libraries.
Leveling books requires thoughtful consideration of what a reader needs to know and be able to do at each level. It trains teachers to notice the supports and roadblocks provided by text, and it is one of the best ways to learn how to teach reading.
