Comprehension Strategy Instruction in Core Reading Programs
Effective instruction in comprehension strategies requires deliberate modeling by teachers through think-aloud accompanied by extensive guided practice (approximately 7 to 24 lessons) and independent practice. The authors found that the comprehension instruction offered in the five best-selling basal or core reading programs to be insufficient compared to these research-established criteria.
