Ice Hawks Players Help Students Read
Rochester, Minn.—At Pinewood Elementary School in Rochester, Minnesota, kids are sharpening their reading skills and learning to love books with the help of the Rochester Ice Hawks and American Reading Company’s 100 Book Challenge. The school’s students are reading 30 minutes a day at home and 30 minutes a day at school, and the hockey players join them in the classroom to make sure they’re on their reading game. In 2009, the school did not meet the state’s adequate yearly progress in reading—with 100 Book Challenge in play and the support of teachers, administration, family, and local hockey heroes, officials at Pinewood Elementary say the school is now meeting state requirements for reading progress!
