Massillon School District Credits 100 Book Challenge
Massillon, Ohio—This year, the Massillon City School District climbed out of “Continuous Improvement” and earned an “Effective” rating from the Ohio Department of Education. At Massillon Middle School, the momentum and excitement continue as students again participate in American Reading Company’s 100 Book Challenge program. The district believes that reading is the key to educational opportunities for all of Massillon’s students, and the middle school’s partnership with American Reading Company is helping to lead the charge in fostering a lifelong passion for reading.
Look no further than the sixth-grade reading scores to see what kind of impact the 100 Book Challenge may have had. In 2008–2009, only 58.9 percent of fifth-graders passed the Ohio Achievement Test’s reading exam. As sixth-graders the next year, 76.2 of those same students passed the reading test. Last year, the school’s seventh grade was the only class in the district to show at least one year’s worth of growth in one academic year; they met the growth expectation in math and surpassed it in reading. The district is moving in the right direction—toward every student reading at or above grade level—and American Reading Company is proud to be along for the ride!
