Our Thematic Collections comprise more than 2,000 titles relating to specific topics in the fields of science, social studies, and language arts. Each collection focuses on one unified theme and spans multiple grade levels. Each basket contains 25 books. All collections can be purchased in 100 Books About…packages.

Ancient Civilizations
This social studies theme collection is appropriate for middle school students. Books in this collection cover the BCE period up to about 200 CE with an international focus (Ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece, Ancient China, India, Mayan Civilization, Mesopotamia).

Biographies
Concentrating on heroes, this collection includes those who are well known such as Rosa Parks and Abraham Lincoln, as well as those who are not, particularly lesser-known heroes who are or were people of color and women of all races.

Bugs
This is a mostly nonfiction study of everything with six, eight, or 100 legs from mosquitoes to spiders to centipedes.

Civil Rights and Social Justice
This can be an important resource for middle school or high school classes studying the Civil Rights movement in the United States, enabling students to see connections between civil rights and other historic movements for social justice. The collection focuses on struggles for social justice and social, economic, and civil rights. Some of the topics addressed in the collection include: desegregation struggles, women’s and/or black people’s fights for voting rights, Montgomery Bus Boycott, gay and lesbian rights, unionization, modern feminist movement, Justice for Janitors, Black Power movement, Migrant Workers’ Rights labor movement, Apartheid, etc.

Civil War
This collection includes books on the politics, battles, and struggles of the American Civil War period. It also includes topics such as enslavement resistance and the concurrent women’s suffrage movement from 1800 to the beginning of the Reconstruction period.

Fantasy
This collection can be an important resource for middle school language arts classes studying literary genres. The collection includes books on imaginary worlds, cultures, and creatures. It offers more advanced students a literary genre study on how fantasy writers use language as well as the people, customs, magics, languages, and creatures they invent to create a sense of a new and complete world.

Habitats and Environments
This collection can provide a valuable resource for elementary or middle school classes studying the ecosystems of the world and ways to protect them. These baskets focus on the relationships between animals, humans, plants, and the earth itself. Covering a range of conservation topics from recycling to deforestation to oil spills to species extinction, as well as ecosystem topics such as habitats, life cycles, and food chains, the Habitats and Environments collection off ers a holistic study of earth and its inhabitants.

A broad genre study, this collection includes historical fiction from many time periods and many parts of the world.

Immigration
This collection can be a significant resource for middle or high school social studies classes studying immigration and seeking to enlarge its understanding of the immigrant experience. The collection focuses on the experience of moving from one country to another and dealing with adjusting to a new culture, language, and country. It includes stories of immigrants from all over the world. Books about refugees, pilgrims, and forced immigration (slavery) are also included.

Marine Life
Focusing on all life forms that spend the majority of their time in salt water, this collection ranges from coral reefs and seahorses to dolphins and sharks to penguins and polar bears.

Medieval Civilizations
This is a social studies theme collection appropriate for middle school students. It is recommended that at least two baskets be purchased for best results— allowing for more in-depth research and providing enough information at a variety of levels. The collections cover the period from about 200 CE to 1500 CE with an international focus (medieval Europe, Aztec Civilization, Inca Civilization, Ghana, Mali, Songhay, Japan, etc.)

Native Americans
From the Inuit to the Lakota, the Pueblo to the Lenee Lenape, this collection includes books on the history, traditional tales, and present-day cultures of the peoples who first inhabited North America.

Poetry
The poetry collection is appropriate for any language arts curriculum. Poetry is a topic on most standardized tests. This collection is mostly a nonfiction study of the solar system, stars, the planets, and the history of human space exploration.

Westward Expansion
This is a significant resource for elementary or middle school social studies classes who are studying US history and the period of Westward Expansion. From 1810 to 1900, what would come to be the American West was a hotbed of conflict, controversy, and adventure—and the events of that time continue to shape our present. This collection includes books on such topics as the Transcontinental Railroad, Chinese immigration to the West Coast, the Gold Rush, Native American resistance, the Mexican-American War, missions, the Pony Express, slavery in the new territories, and pioneers and wagon trains.

That’s Us: Proud to Be Making Things Better
These books contain stories about people from all cultures who are brave enough to change the world around them. This collection focuses on the stories of children who encounter an injustice, a need, or a challenge, and respond with concern, creativity, and determination.

This collection focuses on Hispanic-American families and experiences. The stories explore the lives of Hispanic children and families bonding together as they navigate through the challenges of finding their way in a new culture.
