ACTIVE SUMMER, ACTIVE MINDS, so writes The Washington Post
in a recent article about summer reading loss.
This is what experts from Johns Hopkins University, the University of
Tennessee, the University of Virginia, and elsewhere say happens over the
summer:
“
Students from low-income homes lose two to three months in reading skills
learned in the previous school year.
“
Middle-class students make slight gains in reading achievement as measured
on standardized tests.
What to do, according to these researchers, is to have students and parents
plan to read books over the summer to prevent summer reading loss. And if
students, with parents’ help, can read lots of books during summer break, they can
gain a month’s reading growth!
