The 100 Book Challenge is the ideal reading system for use by special needs students
More inclusive than exclusive, more expansive than prescriptive, more engaging and empowering than directive and limiting, the 100 Book Challenge provides almost all the key ingredients that allow special needs students to succeed:
• Careful matching of students to texts at their own independent levels • Immersion in success level reading • Specification of skills the student needs to master at each level in order to progress to the next • One-on-one instruction • Motivation, recognition and reward for effort • Student choice.
Students of all ages who receive special education services often embrace the 100 Book Challenge immediately, because it allows them the reading success they have been denied for so long. 100 Book Challenge combines phonics and meaning-based learning models to guarantee student success from the very beginning and then supports student achievement through advanced levels.
100 Book Challenge immerses students in real books--- interesting books, books the students choose to read. Hundreds of different titles are organized into color-coded collections and presented in an easy-to-understand sequence. Students read voraciously and strategically. Built into the book-leveling sequence are the phonics skills students need to acquire to ensure success. These skills are further made explicit for the student, teacher and parent via Skills Cards designed for each reading level.
Through real reading in real books, students with special needs achieve real results.
