School District Applies for State Security Upgrade Funds

June 20, 2018

Cambridge, Wis.

The Deerfield School District has applied for $59,853 worth of grants through the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s 2018 School Safety Initiative.

The DOJ is offering to grant school districts $20,000 for security upgrades per building; it counts Deerfield as having one elementary, one middle school and one high school building although the middle and high school are under the same roof.

DOJ breaks down its security expenditures into tiers. Tier one is classroom door locks; tier two is shatter-resistant film for glass entryways and doors; and tier three are “advanced security expenditures” such as staff training, radios and security cameras.

Superintendent Michelle Jensen reported that the district had requested mostly tier two and “advanced” items, as the school’s locks were upgraded during the most recent referendum.
