World Historical Fiction

World History

Imagine there was a machine that could take you to a different time, anywhere in the world. Where would you go, and what would you want to see? That is exactly what World Historical Fiction can do for you. Stow away on a journey around the world with Captain Cook or ride with King Arthur and his knights. Find out what is was like to grow up as a girl in Ancient Greece or as a homeless boy in medieval Korea. No matter which journey you choose, there is no doubt that you will think differently about your world on your return!

RESEARCH LABS® Genre Studies

RESEARCH LABS is a backwards design model that allows teachers to differentiate instruction while teaching grade level content standards to all students. Starting with big ideas/concepts students need to grasp in order to master state standards, we backmap to create a project-based learning framework through which students read, write, engage in accountable talk, and produce their own books on independent research topics.

Teach Elements of a Genre

Each student engages in a carefully scaffolded, extended research project, taking a final written product in the selected genre through the entire writing process from note-making to publication.

Unit of Study

Teachers use a novel or a set of short stories in the selected genre to teach students to read literature and write literary analysis essays. Students will engage in informational research on the companion topic to gain the expertise necessary to create their own narratives in the genre. A genre card and graphic organizers structure the teaching and application of the Common Core Standards to literature.

Grade Level Complex Text

Teachers provide grade-level rigor through the use of complex text to teach literature in one genre, ELA CCSS, and academic vocabulary.

Leveled Texts

Students are immersed in a genre through a leveled library of literature and informational texts of the sort authors use when they research and write in this genre.
