Southwood Elementary School kicked off the 2010-2011 school year with 100 Book Challenge along with 31 days of professional development. At the end of the fi rst year of 100 Book Challenge, Southwood realized dramatic gains in OAA test scores and made Adequate Yearly Progress for the first time in three years.
The Performance Index reflects the achievement of every student enrolled for the full academic year. Southwood Elementary School’s score increased from 71.3 last year to 78.9.
Adequate Yearly Progress, a federally required measure, was Met for the first time in 3 years at Southwood Elementary.
Value-Added Measure Ratings represent the progress (grades 4-8) made since last school year. Southwood Met expected growth in Reading for fifth grade and was Above expected growth for fourth grade.

“Southwood has a group of dedicated professionals that were working very hard to make AYP and improve student achievement, but were unable to reach their goals. American Reading was hired to help. After one year of intense professional development and coaching, the performance index score rose from 71.3 to 78.9! We are very excited about the progress we have made and are sure it is largely due to the professional development we received from American Reading. We will continue to use the American Reading Program and are reaching for excellence. We will achieve it!”
